Moving, merging and tuning cloud platforms.

Something complex that needs untangling, a migration that has stalled, a platform nobody quite understands any more: that's the work I take on through Sovereign Technologies, my consulting practice. Usually it's a move into AWS or Azure, the mail and identity work that comes with an acquisition, or a platform that costs more to run than it should.

I'm happy to talk it through.

What I do

Moving to the cloud

Moves into AWS and Azure, large and small. I was lead architect on a move that took a legal technology business's data centre into AWS: more than 700 servers and 5 PB of data in about a year, with few outages required, and the data centre shut down at the end. Before a move, I run the assessment: discovery, readiness, the business case and a roadmap.

Mergers and acquisitions

After an acquisition: bringing the new company onto shared systems, or carving a business out of its former parent. Both times I've done it, mail and identity moved along with the servers. In the carve-out, about 100 servers went into Azure, Active Directory was fully separated, and the shared services were untangled with minimal disruption.

Tuning what you run

Getting more out of the AWS and Azure platforms you already run: clear account structure and networking, a modernization roadmap for the applications, and a bill closer to what you use. One example: a data-transfer bill that had climbed to about $17K a month, traced to container image caching and NAT gateway traffic, and brought down to under $1K.

Track record

Since 1997
From a repair counter to enterprise cloud platforms.
7 data centres
Left for AWS. I was one of the eight who built the foundation.
150+ AWS accounts
Governed with Control Tower.
Three continents
Platforms in North America and the UK, team members in Asia too.

How engagements run

  • Usually months, sometimes weeks. Inside your team, on your tools and your tickets.
  • Hands-on. I draw the architecture, then build it with your people.
  • Handed over. The last ten percent is documentation, operational readiness and knowledge transfer, so your team can run it without me.
